Introducing Destiny, from the New Series Voltaire’s Book of Fate

This handsome design once housed the legendary writer Voltaire’s Zadig, or The Book of Fate, first published in 1747. The Book of Fate tells the story of Zadig, an ancient Babylonian philosopher. It is a philosophical treatise that makes startlingly effective use of contradiction and juxtaposition. In it one finds the seeds of the modern detective story, including a likely source of inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe’s master of “ratiocination,” C. Auguste Dupin.

There are few authors more influential and admired than Voltaire (1684–1778). His work especially appealed to late 19th-century France, which was recovering from an 1870 defeat by Prussia. The French people responded by focusing on objects of profound beauty and intellectual depth in order to showcase their ideals and dreams for the future. These ideals were exemplified by the work of Voltaire, one of France’s most celebrated sons. It is no small wonder that his Zadig was chosen to be reprinted in this marvellous golden binding, crafted in 1893 by Chamerot et Renouard in Paris.

Today the original binding can be found in the Rare Book and Special Collections archive at the Princeton University Library in New Jersey, USA.

Destiny is available as: Grande, ultra, midi, slim and mini hardcover journals, lined and unlined guest books and a pencil case.

  1. What an amazing collection. I bought the guest book to write in as a journal. I only wish you had created the Business Planner in this. It is symbolic to me in such a way, ie. That is focuses on goals and achieving them and to play on the theme of “The book of fate/Destiny”. Speaks to finding your destiny or creating it. Please can you create more business planners, they are exceptional format and I am struggling to find in South Africa. Send, send send… We are waiting. I have life stories to tell.

  2. I love love love my Paperblanks Maxi Plannners in the Horizontal style. I’ve been getting them since 2011 thru 2024 with the exception of 2022 and 2023 due to circumstances. I’ve ordered designs Gold Inlay, Mystique, and Aurelia. This year I got Oceania aka Diamond Rosette I believe. All are gorgeous designs. Maxi is the perfect size. It seems more difficult to find this size however in beautiful designs which is very disappointing. I used to buy from a local vendor but they stopped selling planners. Then I ordered from Jennibink annually but due to their mishandling my order in 2022 which I never received I had to find another vendor. It has become a challenge. But I am persistent. I found one for 2023 on the Oceania design which I plan to order. I hope you keep finding fantastic designs and keep producing the Maxi Horizontal
