In defiance of those who preferred sophistication over instinct and emotion, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) helped the Romantic revolution take flight. He championed the fundamental democracy of poetics and believed that the artist’s task was to delight and inspire the widest audience by celebrating nature.

His was a mind and a nature well suited to evoke the quietude and power of a life simply lived. Wordsworth was educated at Cambridge but cared little about formal education, lofty diction, fashion or pretense. In his view, “The Poet binds together by passion and knowledge the vast empire of human society, as it is spread over the whole earth, and over all time.”

…Beneath the trees
Ten thousand dancing in the breeze.
The waves beside them danced but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee…
