This intricate and delicate foliage pattern seen on our Wildwood journal evokes a walk in a sun-dappled woodland.
The original work was crafted for a 17th-century binding of the Passion Series, created in 1521 by the great Renaissance engraver Lucas van Leyden.
Derived from a classic binding from the French school of design, this foliage pattern was originally crafted from goatskin leather tooled in gold. The binding was designed to hold a set of 14 plates from the Passion Series, a famous collection of engravings.
This particular edition contains Jan Harmensz. Muller’s 17th-century copy of the work. Muller was best known for his skillful reinterpretations of the work of his predecessors.
With a complicated history not unlike the tangled branches on its cover, this Tree of Life binding stands out amongst the British Library’s collection of antique tomes.
