Following the release of our William Kilburn series five years ago, a new Anemone softcover journal has joined the repertoire this spring. William Kilburn (1745–1818) was an Irish Illustrator of botanical art whose work is famously seen in William Curtis’ 18th-century botany book, Flora Londinensis. Kilburn created life-sized watercolours and signed etchings and was a leading calico designer and printer.
This design is mesmerizing, taking inspiration from William Kilburn’s signature seaweed patterns, into which we have incorporated colourful petals and winding twigs. However, Kilburn’s essence and sense of freedom within his work is still retained with his unique sea anemone, coral, and mosses at the forefront of this design.

Kilburn played a significant role in influencing the era of decorative arts that followed. His designs were so popular that when he became a partner at a textile factory, he presented a print to Queen Charlotte.
When his art began to gain recognition, Kilburn faced issues with mass production facilities who replicated and profited off his work. Due to this he naturally became an activist for artists’ rights, seeking justice not only for his work but to protect other artists’ work too. He stood up for what he believed in and went to court to protect copyright in the textile industry, paving the way for future textile artists to flourish.
Despite his best efforts, Kilburn was unsuccessful in stopping bigger corporations from stealing his designs. His work continued to be replicated, and he died bankrupt in 1818. Here at Paperblanks, we wanted to shine light on a name that is often forgotten in history, by honouring William Kilburn and bringing his prints back to life. We are thrilled to present our much-loved Anemone design in a new softcover journal format.
Anemone is available as a softcover journal, hardcover journal, and canvas bag.
