We love a good inspirational quote. It is often difficult to put into words one’s own feelings on a particular subject, so when someone else eloquently sums it up, that “A-ha!” moment can be incredibly invigorating. When it comes to art and creativity, it seems obvious that we should turn to successful artists for advice and motivation. But focusing solely on the words of famous artists means running the risk of missing out on some outside-the-box ideas and the chance to see your passion in a whole new light.
For today’s Sketchbook Saturday (the first of 2015), we’re getting the new year started with words of wisdom from some unlikely sources.
“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.”
-Jonathan Swift, 17th-/18th-century satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric
“Anyone who says you can’t see a thought simply doesn’t know art.”
-Wynetka Ann Reynolds, zoologist
“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”
-Henry Ward Beecher, 19th century Abolitionist
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”
-Aristotle, ancient Greek philosopher and scientist
“An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.”
-Charles Horton Cooley, sociologist
